Wood is a beautiful but high-maintenance material in Central Texas. Cedar fences and pine decks look amazing the day they are installed and start to weather almost immediately. UV from the sun breaks down lignin in the surface fibers and turns them grey. Rain pulls tannins out of the wood and stains lower boards. Mildew and algae take hold on the shaded side and accelerate the breakdown. A properly cleaned fence or deck looks dramatically better and lasts significantly longer than one that is allowed to weather untouched.

Our wood cleaning process is built around chemistry and technique, not raw pressure. We apply a wood-safe cleaner with a low-pressure pump. The solution kills mildew, algae, and bacteria, lifts grey weathering, and softens trapped dirt so it can be rinsed away cleanly. We do not just blast the wood with high pressure; that approach gouges the soft early-wood between the grain rings and leaves a fuzzy, scarred surface that looks worse a few weeks later than it did before cleaning.

Once the solution has done its work, we rinse with controlled pressure at the right distance and angle for the wood species. Cedar fence boards, pressure-treated pine deck boards, and hardwood decking like ipe all respond a little differently, and we adjust on the fly to get a clean lift without surface damage. The goal is wood that is uniformly clean across the entire surface, with the original grain pattern and color showing through clearly.

After cleaning we often recommend a brightener step. A brightener is a mild acid that neutralizes the alkaline residue from the cleaning solution, balances the pH back to neutral, and brings out the warm honey and amber tones in cedar and other woods. It is the difference between a clean fence and a clean fence that genuinely looks renewed. Brightener is an optional add-on, and we always discuss whether your specific surface benefits from it.

Decks get the same chemistry-first approach. We clean the deck boards, railings, balusters, and stairs, paying attention to the grooves and gaps where mildew likes to settle. After cleaning, the deck is in ideal condition for a stain or sealer. If you plan to stain or seal, the typical recommendation is to let the wood dry for at least 48 to 72 hours before applying any finish. Many homeowners ask whether their fence or deck is too far gone to clean. The answer is almost always no. Even badly weathered cedar and pressure-treated wood typically come back beautifully after a proper clean and brighten. The exceptions are wood with significant rot, soft spots, or insect damage; in those cases cleaning will not bring the wood back, and replacement boards may need to be planned first.
